Close fights in GTA 5 are easier to handle once you stop treating every punch like a contest. A quick lock-on gives you a clear view of the attacker, and it also makes the dodge input much more reliable, which matters when you are trying to protect a valuable GTA 5 Accounts character from a random street brawl. Hold the aim button before the first punch comes your way. That small habit changes how the whole encounter feels.
Get the Lock-On Right
On PlayStation, hold L2. Xbox players should hold LT, while PC players use the Right Mouse Button. Your character will stay focused on the nearby opponent instead of turning toward traffic, walls, or another NPC. This is especially useful in tight spaces, where the camera can become awkward and a punch may arrive from outside your usual view. Do not wait until you are already being hit. Lock on as soon as the fight starts, then watch the opponent's shoulders and hands.
Choose Your Dodge Method
The dodge button depends on your platform. PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 use Square, Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles use X, and PC uses Space Bar. You can tap it just before the hit lands. The timing window is short, but it is worth practising because a well-timed dodge leaves the attacker open for a counter. Press the attack button straight after your character moves aside. You do not need a long combo. One clean punch is often enough to regain control.
Tap the dodge button as the opponent begins the swing.
Hold the button when several punches are coming quickly.
Counter only after the attacker has missed.
Keep the target locked while moving around the fight.
When Holding Dodge Helps
Not everyone enjoys reacting to split-second animations, and that is fine. Holding the dodge button can make incoming melee attacks much easier to avoid against the locked target. It is useful when an NPC starts throwing repeated punches or when the camera is crowded by other pedestrians. Still, do not hold it forever. Move away when you need space, then release the button and counter during the brief opening.

Weapons Need the Same Timing
The mechanic also works against a baseball bat, crowbar, hatchet, or another close-range weapon. Watch the swing rather than the weapon itself, since the character's movement usually gives you an earlier warning. Lock on, dodge to the side, and answer with a short attack before backing away. With a little practice, you will stop mashing buttons and start picking your moments, leaving more health for the drive, mission, or escape that follows with cheap GTA 5 Money available for the rest of your plans.
